James Fallows

National Correspondent
The Atlantic Monthly

A national correspondent for “The Atlantic,” James Fallows is one of America’s most respected journalists. Today, he’s reporting on how the country is putting itself back together in the wake of recession and division.

To find the real story of what America’s facing, Fallows embarked on a three-year, 54,000-mile journey by single-engine plane, visiting towns and cities across the country. The result is his “Atlantic” story “How America Is Putting Itself Back Together”: an in-depth study of the civic and individual reinventions happening in all corners of the country. These stories of strength and innovation show a different kind of America: one that’s raveling up the social fabric, and taking advantage of a new era of opportunity. Fallows has written for “The Atlantic” since the late 1970s.

He has won the National Book Award, the American Book Award, and the National Magazine Award. His most recent book is “China Airborne,” a study of the staggering rise of airlines and airport infrastructure in China. His documentary series “On the Frontlines: Doing Business in China” was awarded the 2010 Emmy Award. He has been a software designer for Microsoft, a speechwriter for President Jimmy Carter, the editor of “US News & World Report,” and is an instrument-rated private pilot. He is also now the chair in U.S. media at the U.S. Studies Centre at the University of Sydney in Australia.
