City of Quitman, MS

I retired in 1995 from Sears and my wife (Judy) and I traveled extensively before moving back to Quitman. I missed being involved in a business and we moved to Mishawaka, IN to become Vice President of a Signature Electronics Corporation, a Sign Company. Judy did not really enjoy the area and we sold our interest in the company, which had grown four fold while we were there, and moved back home. For the next several years we traveled all over the South playing in tennis tournaments and enjoying life. The City of Quitman, Mayor, asked me to head up a committee to refurbish the City tennis courts. When it became apparent that the professional guidance I brought in was not going to be utilized, I became frustrated with how the City spent the money and decided that without any governmental experience, surely I could do better. Eighty hour work weeks became the norm as we worked with numerous volunteers to improve our City. Each time we accomplished something, additional volunteers emerged. People really do care and our City is an example of the positive things that follow a dedicated team of volunteers. The Quitman Story is an example of a City decimated by N.A.F.T.A. and the housing crisis as we lost 1,800 textile workers and several hundred at our lumber mill. The challenge was to change course and identify our assets and to market our City. We still have a long way to go, but we know our City is a gold mine of opportunity with the addition of 1G Fiber to our homes.
