State Broadband Initiative (SBI) Director
EdLab Group

Kathy Johnson is the State Broadband Initiative (SBI) Director for EdLab Group, a non-profit organization whose mission is to leverage the power of technology and diversity to transform teaching and learning. As SBI Director, Johnson manages the SBI-funded, statewide broadband programs for Idaho (known as LinkIDAHO) and Wyoming (LinkWYOMING). She also serves as communications director for LinkWISCONSIN as a member of the LinkAMERICA team.

Johnson was appointed by Alabama Gov. Bob Riley to launch and direct the states broadband efforts, including oversight of the Alabama SBI award and Connecting Alabama program. A vocal advocate for broadband access and adoption, Johnson presented at a number of national and state conferences and served as a broadband ambassador for the Internet Innovation Alliance.

As the governors broadband director, she worked with communities across Alabamafrom the largest municipalities to the states smallest, often-times left behind rural townsin an effort to identify funding for broadband and related projects, assess current infrastructure and usage, conduct research of availability and use of broadband, and promote broadband statewide to better serve Alabamians. Through her efforts, the conversation of what broadband is and can do to improve lives flourished, Internet Service Providers focused on filling in service gaps and multiple partnerships were formed in order to continue the critical work of increasing access to and use of broadband. Johnson also worked with state departments and local officials in identifying how the governors broadband program could advance their efforts in areas like economic development, job creation, public safety, education and telehealth.

Johnson is no stranger to managing large programs. She has directed four other statewide initiatives, including the Alabama Health Care Information Network, Children First Foundation, the Alabama Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy and the Alabama Medical Directors Association.

She is a 2003 graduate of Leadership Alabama and has served on dozens of national, state and local boards. She was appointed by the governor to represent the Second Congressional District on the Alabama Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Board and the Governor's Task Force on Infant Mortality.

A vocal advocate for change, Johnson has served as keynote speaker to over 90,000 people across the country.

Kathy attended Jones Junior College in Ellisville, Mississippi, and the University of Southern Mississippi. She lives in Montgomery, Alabama, and enjoys spending time with her three children and two-year old grandson, as well as volunteering through community service projects.
