Laura Morrison

Laura Morrison was elected to serve as an Austin City Council Member in June of 2008 and re-elected in 2011. She is a champion on the Council for open government, sustaining neighborhood character, protecting the environment, promoting affordable housing, supporting local businesses and improving public health and social services. With a background in mathematics and engineering she brings an element of sophistication to technology and analytic issues.
Council Member Morrison serves on several Council committees including the Emerging Technology and Telecommunications Committee (Chair), Audit and Finance, Comprehensive Planning and Transportation, and Public Health and Human Services.
She also represents the City on the Greater Austin Chamber Technology Partnership Board, the Community Advancement Network Board of Directors and the City of Austin/Austin Independent School District (AISD)/Travis County Joint Subcommittee.
With a Master’s in mathematics and a Graduate Certificate in Community Preparedness and Disaster Management, Laura’s professional career has included working as an engineer, as a consultant in export compliance management system development, and in the field of pandemic flu preparedness. As an engineer for Lockheed Martin she led a team of 35 engineers in algorithm development and oversaw software system implementation.
Laura has been a strong advocate for digital inclusion and for community technology service providers, and worked to secure additional funding for the City of Austin's Grant for Technology Opportunities Program. Most recently, she helped lead the effort to bring Google Fiber to Austin.
