Hunter Newby is one of today’s top innovators and entrepreneurs with a track record of success in communications network infrastructure. As an advocate of new solutions for a modern, networked world, he is at the forefront of advancing the future of connectivity.
Hunter began his career in the telecom industry at WorldCom after earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Communications from Drexel University. From 1998 to 2008 he was a Founder, Chief Strategy Officer and a Director of Telx, one of the leading carrier hotel interconnection facility operators in the U.S. Under Mr. Newby’s direction, Telx successfully created an entirely new business model originating in New York City, expanding to Atlanta and ultimately nationwide and in the process built one of the strongest brand names for carrier-neutral, core interconnection facilities in the world.
In 2008, Hunter founded Allied Fiber, the first integrated, network-neutral provider of dark fiber the United States. Hunter’s ambition for Allied Fiber is to expand the availability of dark fiber and neutral colocation facilities where all network operators can receive direct, open access. This model of providing communications infrastructure as ‘a real estate business for network operators’ enables choice and increases its customer's profitability as well as its own. By developing modular colocation facilities in towns and cities throughout the US, Hunter also aims to strengthen area communities to become centers of commerce and boost local economic growth. Hunter also actively invests in new ventures to advance the ICT sector. He is an investor and joint venture partner in several carrier hotels including 325 Hudson Street in New York, 1102 Grand Boulevard in Kansas City, 401 North Broad Street in Philadelphia and 717 South Wells Street in Chicago.
He is a member of Standard & Poor’s Society of Industry Leaders and was Vice Chairman of the Pacific Telecommunications Council‘s Advisory Council from 2004-2008. As the recipient of numerous awards, in both 2005 and 2006, Hunter received the Internet Telephony VoIP Service Provider of the Year Award and was named to the Global Telecoms Business Top 40 Under 40 in 2010.
Hunter is a published author, served on several Advisory Boards, a frequent public speaker and moderator at industry conferences. He has written and presented numerous technical and business reports in the communications industry. In addition he currently writes a regular monthly column for Internet Telephony magazine titled Infrastructure Peering.
