Dr. Haruo Okamura is a high-speed optical transmission and standards expert. He is currently the president of Global Plan Inc. and the developer of the "Okamura Model," a low-cost optical cable solution for remote areas that is already being used in Japan and is now being implemented to bring free WiFi to the Mt. Everest and Annapurna region of Nepal. Born in Tokyo, Okamura has worked with NTT Network Innovation Labs, NEC business unit (Japan), Corning Inc. (USA) and is currently a visiting professor at Waseda University in Tokyo. He has served as vice chair of the ITU-T SG15 (Optical Transport Networks), a vice chair of ITU-TSAG (chairing the ITU-T work program and ITU-T strategies) and the chair of IECSC86C (fiber optic systems).
