John Leary is the Information Technology Manager for Westfield Gas + Electric dba Whip City Fiber in Westfield, Massachusetts. As locally owned municipal utility employee, he is spearheading at $15M fiber-to -the-premise project for the city with a population of approximately 41,000 people. The project started in February 2017 and to this date has successfully brought symmetrical gigabit speed to nearly 5,000 households and businesses. He is creating a new Fiber Division within the established 120-year-old gas and electric utility utilizing existing employees and hiring exceptional talent.

Westfield Gas + Electric\Whip City Fiber has also expanded its reach beyond the borders of the City of Westfield. They are presently working with 20 Western Massachusetts communities by using institutional knowledge to project manage the design, build and eventual startup of locally owned and operated fiber to the premise networks. They have become a succesful wholesale Internet Service Provider and Network Operator for several of these previously undeserved broadband communities. In April 2019, Westfield Gas + Electric\Whip City Fiber was awarded $10.2M from Federal Communications Commission Connect America II Fund on behalf of the 20 towns.

John has a passion for Information Technology and is an ordained permanent deacon within the Roman Catholic Church.
