McElhiney has worked for Peak Campus, a student housing property management company that currently manages more than 55,000+ beds across 100+ assets throughout the United States, since 2014. In addition to managing existing assets and managing assets built by others, McElhiney oversees the purchasing of technology services for the property portfolio, acting as an in-house expert consultant for property owners and ensuring a consistent and quality product delivered across all the Atlanta-based company's assets. Nearly all the company's locations offer bulk internet service and many still use television services of some kind. In addition, nearly all the properties include other technology features such as surveillance cameras, access control, and other IoT-based smart services ranging from in-unit voice assistants and lighting controls to automated utility controls and environmental monitoring systems. Technologies under management include everything from coax-based cable modem systems to fiber and ethernet and fiber-to-the-unit systems. McElhiney works with property owners to recommend the best use of available infrastructure and the services available to deliver high quality technology amenities to residents. Prior to joining Peak Campus, McElhiney worked as a sales engineer and director of account management for a private cable operator and internet service provider; he held several management positions for a large nationwide telco; managed a regional Wireless Internet Service Provider (WISP) and had experience in designing, selling and supporting public safety wired and wireless communications systems. He primarily concentrates on wireless technology, but true to his system-design background, emphasizes that good wireless networks are built on the backbone of good fiber optic and wired networks.
