Sean Gonsalves, senior reporter and editor at ILSR’s Community Broadband Networks Initiative, is a longtime journalist. He is part of the senior CBN team – a 15-year-old initiative of the Institute for Local Self-Reliance that advocates for universal access to fast, affordable, and reliable Internet service. The CBN website – – contains more than 4,000 stories, nearly 600 podcasts, dozens of reports, policy briefs, case studies, and instructional videos on the broadband-ification of America. It is one of the nation’s leading storehouses of information on municipal broadband and other forms of publicly-owned, locally controlled broadband networks.

Gonsalves is well-versed in how federal broadband funds in the American Rescue Plan Act and the BEAD program are being put to use by states and local communities. He is currently an active board member for the middle-mile network OpenCape, which serves Cape Cod and southeastern Massachusetts. He is also an advisory board member for FalmouthNet, a citizen-led nonprofit spearheading an effort to bring fiber-to-the-home service to the town of Falmouth, Mass., on Cape Cod, where he lives.
