ADTRAN ONE Portfolio Offers Economical Way to Meet Bandwidth Demand

HUNTSVILLE, AL -- By converging the access and transport networks, a new solution from networking equipment vendor ADTRAN aims to help service providers meet the growing demand for bandwidth.

ADTRAN's new Optical Networking Edge (ONE) portfolio, which will begin trials in early 2011, integrates packet optical functionality for service delivery, aggregation and transport, providing operators with the network access and edge scalability needed to deliver high-quality experience for emerging services. It lets service providers bridge the gap between network access and transport, leverage their installed bases and extend the bandwidth efficiencies of the core all the way to the optical edge. In addition, it provides the modularity needed to address current and future services, while accelerating time to revenue, eliminating multibox complexity, simplifying operations and reducing costs.

Convergence Starts at the Access Platform
“While most vendors start converging packet and optical functionality in the core, ADTRAN is taking a unique approach by focusing on its fast-growing Total Access 5000 multiservice access platform,” says Ron Kline, an analyst with consulting firm Ovum. “Given the Total Access 5000’s strength in the access market that extends all the way to the customer premises, the new optical and OTN features will allow providers to keep pace with exploding bandwidth without having to rip and replace their existing access equipment. The system size modularity presents a pay-as-you-grow approach that will help minimize capital investments.”

The ONE portfolio includes several edge-optimized transport modules and network management capabilities. The initial release supports high-bit-rate Carrier Ethernet aggregation, SONET/SDH Multi-Service Provisioning Platform (MSPP) on a card, CWDM and DWDM networking scalable from a single wavelength to 400 Gbps on a single fiber pair, thus eliminating network edge bandwidth limitations.
