DOHA, QATAR - Qtel, the incumbent telco in Qatar, announced the commercial launch of Qtel Fibre for residential customers. After months of installation and development, the service is now live in the areas first deployed, with work ongoing to extend the service across the country in the months ahead.

Qatar sees this fiber-to-the-home network as an important component of its economic development strategy. The chairman of Qtel, His Excellency Sheikh Abdullah Bin Mohammed Bin Saud Al-Thani, comments, “The nationwide fiber network will provide the foundation for our nation’s ongoing progress towards the 2030 vision and the growth of the knowledge-based economy.”

Qtel Fibre has already been installed in more than 16,000 homes, and the company is currently making approximately 1,500 new installations per week. Customers in these homes will now be able to switch over to the new services, including voice and Internet access at speeds ranging from 10 Mbps to 1 Gbps. Video services will be added soon.

By 2014, Qtel Fibre will cover all of Qatar, with connections provided to homes across the country. Qtel has promised to keep prices competitive.
