MONTPELLIER, FRANCE - Close to 41 million households subscribed to fiber-based broadband by the end of 2009, and 52 million subscribers are expected by the end of this year, according to French research firm IDATE.  The global market for fiber to the home and fiber to the building grew by 16 percent in the second half of 2009, the company said.

By the end of 2014, there will be close to 306 million homes passed for FTTH/B around the globe, of which more than half will still be located in Asia and 18 percent in Western Europe. By that point, 18 countries will have rolled out fiber-based broadband to more than half their populations, compared with eight countries today.

One of the fastest-growing markets is Eastern Europe, which already has 3.5 million FTTH/B customers, compared with around 2 million in Western Europe, and will have more FTTx subscribers than North America by 2012. Some Eastern European countries, such as Lithuania, have particularly dynamic markets, with swift  rollouts and high take rates.

Elsewhere, and especially in Asia, marketing FTTx services has become operators’ primary concern, as coverage rates have already reached the saturation point in the most advanced markets. Bandwidth prices are falling as a result; for example, HKBN in Hong Kong is offering 1 Gbps Internet access for $26 per month.

Rank # Country = FTTH/B Subscribers
