HUNTSVILLE, AL - Networking equipment vendor ADTRAN announced a new addition to its FTTH portfolio: the Total Access 1600, a family of one-rack-unit optical line terminals (OLTs) that support both GPON and active Ethernet. These compact OLTs offer an efficient solution for low subscriber-density deployments where lower port counts are required. “The Total Access 1600 is the right solution to address the needs of service providers of all sizes that are looking to offer fiber-based broadband access services but have small and/or space-constrained serving locations,” explains Darrell Brown, ADTRAN Broadband Access product line manager.

Even though the new solutions occupy less space, they have full functionality, including 40 Gbps per system network uplink capability, Ethernet ring support, multisystem link aggregation and stacking options.

The Total Access 1600 family provides four-, eight and 16-port GPON interfaces and a 48-port Gigabit Ethernet interface. Full backward compatibility with the entire Total Access line of optical network terminals (ONTs, or customer-premises equipment) ensures a smooth transition for service providers that want to expand FTTH service coverage further into their existing networks or offer the service in new areas. In addition, ADTRAN’s Service Management System provides service-level management for the entire Total Access portfolio, simplifying the management of broadband services while decreasing operational costs.

“The market for bandwidth-intensive applications has pushed deeper into the Tier 2 and 3 markets, with more and more IOCs and smaller telecom operators looking at equipment that helps them compete effectively in this demanding market,” says David Emberley, research manager for IDC's telecommunications equipment practice. “The ADTRAN Total Access 1600 should be a welcome addition to these operators, given its value proposition, compact size and service density.”
