NORCROSS, GA and MARTINSRIED/MUNICH, GERMANY - In a sign of the growing maturity of fiber-based carrier Ethernet service, interconnection provider Neutral Tandem announced that it has used ADVA Optical Networking's FSP 3000 Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) platform to connect its three major network nodes in lower Manhattan.

After rolling its existing SONET OC-48 system onto a single wavelength of the FSP 3000 platform, Neutral Tandem can now support up to 40 10 Gigabit Ethernet circuits between each of the three locations. Neutral Tandem customers are using the network at both 1 GbE and 10 GbE rates.

Neutral Tandem expects its additional capacity to be used by customers of its Ethernet eXchange service offering. Ethernet eXchange (which is based on the E-NNI standard recently adopted by the Metro Ethernet Forum) enables carrier Ethernet providers to interconnect in an efficient, simplified manner, passing traffic between one another in several neutral interexchange points across the country. This means that an enterprise with locations connected to several different Metro Ethernet rings can now connect all of them together in a transparent fashion.

Jim Theodoras of ADVA Optical explains, "The idea of intercarrier exchange handoff was not possible until this year, when the Metro Ethernet Forum came out with E-NNI, which lets two providers connect to each other, even if they have different addressing and phone number schemes. It just wasn’t feasible five years ago - MEF worked long and hard on this."

John Bullock, senior vice president, engineering and operations at Neutral Tandem, says, “ADVA Optical Networking’s FSP 3000 was chosen for this critical network because of its high-density design, smaller footprint and cost-effective scalability. This solution provides us with the capacity to meet our customers’ bandwidth requirements for Ethernet services.”
