AT&T to Expand Ultra-Fast Internet to 11 More Metros

DALLAS — AT&T plans to connect homes, apartments and small business locations in 11 new metro areas to our internet service with a 1 gigabit connection. This planned expansion is part of a broader and newly created AT&T Fiber umbrella brand. This expansion increases the company's commitment to bring service to at least 67 metros, with plans to launch in 45 metros by the end of this year.

AT&T has already launched its ultra-fast Internet service in parts of 29 of the nation’s largest metro areas. The ultra-fast service is now marketed to over 3 million locations, of which over 500,000 include apartment and condo units. The company says it's on track to exceed the 12.5 million locations planned by mid-2019.

The 11 additional metros planned to launch are:

  • Florida: Gainesville and Panama City

  • Georgia: Columbus

  • Kentucky: Central Kentucky

  • Louisiana: Lafayette

  • Mississippi: Biloxi-Gulfport and Northeast Mississippi

  • North Carolina: Wilmington

  • Tennessee: Southeastern Tennessee and Knoxville

  • Texas: Corpus Christi

“Customer demand for high-speed connectivity is exceeding even our high expectations. Today we’re also introducing the AT&T Fiber umbrella brand, which lets us bring ultra-fast internet to even more residential and business customers through a mix of the latest network technologies,” said David Christopher, chief marketing officer of the AT&T Entertainment Group.

Nearly 3 years ago, AT&T launched its 100 percent fiber network in the first metro area of Austin, Texas. This launch led to a major expansion announcing plans in 2014 to deliver service to 25 major metros. Another push in 2015 announced our plans to further extend availability to at least 56 total metros. The company has also connected over 1 million incremental business customer locations to its fiber network since 2012.

What is AT&T Fiber?

AT&T has over 1 million route miles of fiber globally, and continues to bring faster Internet speeds to more locations. Under the AT&T Fiber umbrella brand the company will use a variety of network technologies to connect more homes, apartments and business customer locations to ultra-fast and low-latency Internet speeds. This new brand includes, but is not limited to, the former AT&T GigaPower network.

AT&T Fiber gives customers the power to choose from a wide range of internet speeds, like AT&T Internet 1000 (replacing AT&T GigaPower), over an ultra-fast Internet connection. With these ultra-fast speeds, customers can seamlessly perform tasks like telecommuting, video-conferencing, sending and receiving large files quickly, high-def video streaming and more.
