AT&T U-Verse Deploys First Wireless TV Solution

SAN JOSE, CA AT&T has deployed the first wireless IPTV service, using an 802.11n wireless IPTV solution from Cisco. The solution, which includes wireless receivers and wireless access points, will be available across the entire AT&T U-verse TV footprint beginning Monday, October 31, just in time for Halloween.

This wireless technology allows consumers to watch TV virtually anywhere in the home - even in rooms not wired for TV, such as the kitchen, basement or indoor garage. TV content is sent from the wireless access point via in-home Wi-Fi to a wireless receiver next to a TV. The TV is plugged into a power source, HDMI cables are attached to it, and the wireless connection is established simply by pressing two buttons.

The solution delivers standard-definition and high-definition programming to multiple receivers with integrated Wi-Fi. One wireless access point per home can support two wireless receivers connected to TVs. Each receiver delivers both live TV channels and interactive services and functions as a Total Home HD DVR, and consumers can view and manage DVR recordings wirelessly from a wired DVR in the home.

Video Operator Benefits
Because no added wiring is required, the solution allows faster service activations and consumer self-installation. With Wi-Fi technology integrated into the receiver, technicians can install receivers without running new wires. The integrated Wi-Fi receiver also lets service providers monitor the device's performance via the network.
