  • Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation (BREMC)

YOUNG HARRIS, GA — Blue Ridge Mountain Electric Membership Corporation (BRMEMC), a member-owned electric cooperative operating in Western North Carolina and Northeast Georgia, recently released areas of expansion for its fiber internet service. These expansions will take place in the first half of 2020, with more areas to be announced in the coming months. The road locations of these areas are listed below.

• Towns County, Georgia: Hwy 66/Crooked Creek and Laurel Hill Road

• Union County, Georgia: Bonnie Lane, Byers Road, Craig Gap, Gumlog Circle

• Clay County, North Carolina: Holland Road, Ledford Chapel Road, Quail Cove Road

• Cherokee County, North Carolina: Cook Bridge Road, Glen Stalcup Road, Partridge Lane

High Meter Saturation

BRMEMC considers several factors when expanding its broadband services. One factor is that BRMEMC looks at areas that have higher meter saturation. Targeting areas with more meters per square mile ensures that BRMEMC is able to expand to the most members possible with each individual expansion within the allotted fiscal year budget. The primary goal for the BRMEMC broadband department is to continue to reach the most members possible with each planned expansion project.

“If we continue to choose areas with higher meter saturation, we will be able to continue bringing our fiber optic services to a large portion of members in rural areas that have not yet experienced high-speed internet. Our goal is for everyone to have access to reliable, efficient internet service, and that is what you receive with our service,” said Manager of Broadband Services Alex King.

BRMEMC has been in the broadband business for more than 17 years. Many co-ops in the Southeast have reached out to BRMEMC for information and consultation before deploying their own broadband services.
