Bryan-College Station to become Suddenlink "GigaSpeed" Community

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, TX — Bryan-College Station area residents and businesses will have access to ultra-high-speed Internet of up to 1 gigabit per second (Gbps) from Suddenlink by mid-2015, making The Research Valley the first Suddenlink market in Texas — and among the first nationally — with community-wide "GigaSpeed" connectivity. The project was part of Gig.U's initiative to accelerate the deployment of ultra high speed networks to leading U.S. universities and their surrounding communities.

Monday's joint announcement from the Research Valley Technology Council, the cities of Bryan and College Station, Texas A&M University and Suddenlink, culminates more than a year of work to ensure the region has the best high-speed data services on the market.

"Today's announcement is a big, big win for our community," Research Valley Technology Council Chairman James Benham said. "We didn't wait for something to happen — we made it happen through a proactive, competitive process. This puts us among the top metros in the country for high-speed Internet service. Plain and simple," Benham said, "if your success relies on ultra-high-speed connectivity, Bryan-College Station just became your best option in Texas."

Quarter Billion Dollar Investment
Suddenlink's recent announcement of "Operation GigaSpeed" — a three-year, almost quarter-billion dollar investment program above and beyond its other capital improvements — spurred local leaders to ensure Bryan-College Station would be the first market area rolled out.

"Bryan-College Station is one of the largest communities we serve, and it's a particular pleasure for us to announce that it will be the first in Texas to get Suddenlink's 1 gigabit service," Suddenlink Southwest Region Senior Vice President of Operations Dave Gilles said.  "What's more, we'll be making this great new service available to all customers in Bryan-College Station, not just to a few chosen neighborhoods."

What it Means for Consumers
Suddenlink, which now offers the fastest residential Internet service in the area, has begun work that will allow local customers to subscribe to a 500 Megabit service early next year and then introduce its 1 Gigabit service in the summer.  The 1 Gigabit service will be approximately 10 times faster than the fastest service it now offers.
