Calix Launches AXOS E9-2 Intelligent Edge System and Calix Cloud

LAS VEGAS, NV — Calix, a provider of broadband communications access systems, introduces two new products: the AXOS E9-2 Intelligent Edge System and Calix Cloud.

AXOS E9-2 Intelligent Edge System
Calix unveiled the AXOS E9-2 Intelligent Edge System, a system that accelerates service providers' transition to NG-PON2, removes the constraints of traditional systems and extends the access edge. The disruptive architecture of the E9-2 delivers a dramatic reduction in total cost of ownership (TCO) for service providers by collapsing access, aggregation, and service edge functions, including routing and subscriber management, into a single system. Selected for NG-PON2 lab testing in Verizon's Innovation Lab in Waltham, MA earlier this year, the AXOS E9-2 allows service providers to converge mobile, business, and residential services networks into one network. For service providers looking to flatten their networks from the data center to the subscriber edge, the E9-2 provides the perfect vehicle for this transformation, forever changing the economics of network operation while accelerating the time to market for advanced services delivery.

Built for the Software Defined Access (SDA) network, the AXOS E9-2 enables service providers to reimagine traditional fiber access network design with a disaggregated architecture optimized for unconstrained growth and scale. By leveraging highly scalable architectures from the data center and complete separation of the control, access, and aggregation functions within the E9-2, service bottlenecks are eliminated. Even in the densest of environments, the non-blocking architecture is managed as a single modular system and allows service providers to take full advantage of the extraordinary services capabilities of NG-PON2.

"With NG-PON2 coming to the market early next year, bandwidth intensive applications like 5G mobile backhaul and multi-tenant business locations will be the first to benefit from the technology," said Matt Davis, program director for IDC. "As NG-PON2 moves to residential deployment, service providers will have a major opportunity to combine disparate networks and quickly operationalize the delivery of new services. A converged network approach that brings together mobile, business, and residential services onto one will be key to allowing service providers to quickly scale and simplify their operations."

The E9-2 Intelligent Edge System is a carrier class system featuring two universal line card slots. The first cards available will be the E9-2 NG1601 access line card and the CLX3001 system aggregation and control card. The NG1601 supports 16 ports of NG-PON2 and XGS-PON in addition to supporting co-existence with other PON technologies, such as GPON. The CLX3001 supports management, control, and data plane redundancy as well as Layer 2 switching for both business and residential services and Layer 3 routing for residential services.

"Service providers around the world today are at a transition point. As they transition to NG-PON2, they must decide whether to accept the constraints of their old network designs or blaze a new trail and lead the network revolution," said Michel Langlois, Calix senior vice president of systems products. "Software Defined Access and open source initiatives are changing the rules of the access network, bringing data center switching architectures into the central office and enabling the opportunity for service providers to move to an elastic, scalable, and converged network model. The E9-2 is a first of its kind system that redefines the services edge of the access network, and in doing so provides the foundation for a new network approach that gives service providers the power to reduce capital investment and lower operational costs in order to stand ready for a world characterized by subscriber driven access."

Calix Cloud

Calix also introduced Calix Cloud, its second-generation family of subscription services for network data analytics and subscriber experience assurance. Leveraging the award-winning and category defining Compass cloud services — now supporting over 400 customers five years after its introduction, Calix Cloud applies Calix's real-world experience in network and subscriber data analytics and transforms it into a family of subscription services that enable service providers to discover new insights, simplify processes, and elevate their business and subscriber experience in an unprecedented manner. Each Calix Cloud subscription focuses on a specific key business function within the service provider organization. By providing insights tailored to each discipline, Calix Cloud can unleash the power of the cloud at a granular level, turning data "noise" into targeted and actionable network and subscriber insights illuminating new paths to revenue growth, business efficiency, and delivering an unmatched subscriber quality of experience for the agile service provider of tomorrow.

Calix introduced five subscriptions within the Calix Cloud family:

Subscriber Cloud - Enables cloud enhanced self-care and new business efficiencies through the power of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs)
Marketing Cloud - Delivers analytics-based growth and subscriber retention as well as automates customer segmentation efforts
Support Cloud - Provides customer service representatives the tools to deliver intelligence-based support that drives an unmatched subscriber experience
Operations Cloud - Empowers network operations teams to efficiently control the subscriber experience by linking subscriber behavior and network performance
Planning Cloud - Gives network planners the tools to invest surgically in their networks based on subscriber behavior data

"With more than 400 service providers already relying on Calix for their access cloud services, we have gained invaluable feedback over these last five years that we continue to integrate into our innovation cycle based on the most pertinent and transformative issues facing service providers today," said Miguel Alonso, Calix vice president of cloud services. "Service providers must unlearn the muscle memory of inefficient processes and the tedious parsing of data. By leveraging Calix Cloud to discover insights, simplify their operations, and elevate their business and their subscriber experience, service providers will benefit from unprecedented agility and gain clear competitive advantage."

Customer deployments of Calix Cloud are scheduled for first quarter, 2017.
