RALEIGH, NCCedar Falls Utilities (CFU), a municipal utility that provides fiber-to-the-home services, selected Tantalus as the technology platform for a fiber-based smart grid solution. This is Tantalus's second Midwest win that leverages its joint offering for public power with Itron.

Cedar Falls Utiities, which provides electricity, water, gas, cable TV and Internet services to more than 17,000 customers, proved its foresight 15 years ago as one of the first Midwestern utilities to install fiber optic communications. In its latest move, the city chose the Tantalus Utility Network (TUNet) to implement an initial deployment of advanced metering infrastructure solutions, using Itron meters.

The Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities contributed to the project with funds from a U.S. Department of Energy grant to develop a more intelligent and more efficient energy grid.

“A smart-grid rollout is the logical next step for utilities already supplying their end
users with fiber or wireless connectivity,” comments Eric Murray, president and CEO of
Tantalus.
