CenturyLink Begins Offering 1 Gbps Fiber Service in Las Vegas

  • CenturyLink
LAS VEGAS – CenturyLink is now offering Internet speeds up to 1 Gbps to customers in select northwest Las Vegas communities as part of its enhanced fiber network expansion. The launch of CenturyLink's 1 Gbps service makes Las Vegas one of a few US cities to offer residential customers access to Internet speeds 100 times faster than average broadband speeds. The 1 Gbps service is being offered first to residents in the city's northwest area, but will be available to additional communities and small businesses in 2014 as CenturyLink expands its fiber network. This next-generation fiber technology enables CenturyLink to provide a symmetrical service, meaning customers can download and upload information at identical speeds of up to 1 Gbps, eliminating bandwidth constraints that come from simultaneously using multiple devices on the same connection.

"The official launch today of our 1 Gbps fiber service is a huge milestone for Las Vegas," said Jeff Oberschelp, CenturyLink vice president and general manager – Las Vegas. "CenturyLink is pleased to be the company bringing gigabit services to the city and providing local residents and businesses with faster Internet speeds than they have ever been offered. We thank Gov. Sandoval, Mayor Goodman and all of the Las Vegas city officials who recognized the significance of this technology and have supported our efforts here."

Fiber Network Enables Highly Advanced Services

The 1 Gbps service uses CenturyLink's fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) technology to deliver highly advanced services to residential and small business customers in some Las Vegas communities. Customers will be able to download a high-definition movie in seconds and stream it from multiple devices, gain instant access to cloud services and applications on demand, and download or upload large multimedia files – all at the same time.
