OAKLAND, CACherokee Communications, the leading telecommunications provider in southeastern Oklahoma, is upgrading its network to support delivery of triple-play services to a growing base of residential and business subscribers. The company selected Zhone Technologies' MXK platform, which provides both GPON and VDSL2 connectivity.

The MXK enables Cherokee Communications to combine data, video and voice in a single platform over a pure packet access network. With the integration of VDSL2 interfaces, which support bandwidth speeds up to 100 Mbps, Cherokee's customers will have access to wire-speed gigabit connectivity. The derived POTS lines will also enable the service provider to take advantage of a low-cost packet network and still provide subscribers with traditional POTS service.

"For our growing business, we needed an access vendor with effective network management capabilities," says Samuel Sanchez, operations manager at Cherokee Communications. "The increased density, scale and performance provided by the Zhone MXK and zNID optical network terminals allow us to simplify our network complexity and address any challenges. The primary reason we chose the Zhone solution was its ability to provide multiple services on a single platform, including Ethernet in the First Mile. This network upgrade allows us to provide advanced communications and connectivity to our residential and business customers."

To date, Zhone has deployed more than 3,600 of its fully redundant, carrier-grade all-IP MXK platforms with more than 150 service providers globally, signaling an FTTx customer growth rate of more than 450 percent in the three-year period from January 2009 to January 2012. Total subscriber capacity supported by these deployments now exceeds 27 million.
