PARIS - China Unicom, one of China's major communications service providers, announced plans to launch one of the largest fiber broadband access networks to date in China, part of an effort to connect millions of Chinese households to superfast Internet.
China Unicom awarded contracts for both GPON and EPON equipment. Alcatel-Lucent was selected as the largest supplier for the GPON network, which will be the largest deployment of GPON technology to date worldwide, extending across 29 provinces. Subscribers will have access to speeds of up to 100 Mbps with guaranteed quality of service levels providing flexibility to support consumer and business services that include IPTV, video on demand, and VoIP, as well as interactive TV, gaming, social networking and more.
Alcatel-Lucent's technology solution is based on its 7360 Intelligent Services Access Manager (ISAM) FX – the company’s highest-capacity fiber access platform.
