CHR Solutions Introduces Mediaroom Billing Interface

NEW ORLEANS, LA – The news from last week's TelcoTV show was that "IPTV is no longer an if, but a how and a when," in the words of CHR Solutions marketing manager Ginny Gardea. Small carriers now see IPTV as a mature and stable technology, and they view IPTV video service as a competitive necessity and a way to stem the loss of access lines.

Worldwide, the leading IPTV middleware for the last several years has been Microsoft Mediaroom, which supports whole-home DVR, multiscreen video and other features with appeal to subscribers. But until recently, although Mediaroom was a popular choice for large telcos, smaller companies saw it as out of reach financially.

Two recent developments have made Mediaroom a more feasible choice for Tier 3 telcos: First, hardware costs were reduced when Mediaroom was implemented on smaller servers, using Microsoft's virtualization technology. Second, small telcos have started banding together to share Mediaroom installations. Systems integrators can set up these shared installations so that customers see only their own provider's channel lineup (and are billed by their own provider), and telcos can't see each other's customers.

Needed: A Quick Path to Monetization
Small telcos also need an easy way to integrate Mediaroom with their billing systems and other back-office systems. Fredel Thomas, director of product management for CHR Solutions, which provides a wide variety of services for communications services providers, says, "We found we had customers asking how to get Mediaroom integrated. They would ask, 'How do I monetize this easily and quickly?'" The problem isn't that Mediaroom is difficult to use, Thomas is quick to add - it's just different. "The integration points are different from what they may be used to," she explains.

CHR became a member of Microsoft's application developer program last spring, which gave the company what Thomas calls a "backstage pass to Mediaroom." The result was a new product, Media(n), which CHR introduced at TelcoTV. Media(n) provides out-of-the-box, seamless integration to CHR Solutions' billing system and can easily be adapted to interface to other billing systems as well. Thomas says the interface solution may also be extended to additional IPTV middleware platforms in the future.

Jerry Weber, director, IPTV and field services at CHR Solutions, adds, “Media(n) speeds time to market and helps level the playing field for CSPs looking to deliver IPTV to their customers with Mediaroom.”

Media(n) synchronizes all the elements of the IPTV ecosystem to streamline back-office operations and drive revenue with Mediaroom. It provides an end-to-end automated experience for provisioning and activating services. For example, customers can order a new channel or a pay-per-view event and have it activated without assistance from customer service representatives or technicians.

Media(n) is designed to leverage the full power of back-office systems, including automated provisioning and device management, service-order management, subscriber management, event management and credit limit management.

Key Features of the Solution

• Communication with Mediaroom (new, change, disconnect and suspend orders)
Media(n) Integrates with the B/OSS, reducing the need for switching among multiple network management terminals to track activity and problems across various segments of the corporate network.

• Customer credit limit management within Mediaroom
Media(n) transforms the cumbersome and complex process of setting credit limits to a single one-click function.

• Retrieving Pay-per-view (PPV)/Video on Demand (VoD) events from Mediaroom
Media(n) provides an automated process that ensures full revenue recognition for PPV/VOD events and an end to revenue leakage.

• Creating “Other Charges and Credits” (OCCs) to bill VoD and PPV events
Media(n) eliminates dual order entry and automates OCCs for PPV/VOD events.
