Colombian Provider Selects Alcatel-Lucent for FTTP Network

PARISAzteca Comunicaciones Colombia, a leading communications services provider in Colombia, selected Alcatel-Lucent as a major supplier for the deployment of a nationwide broadband network that will connect 753 municipalities across the country. The network will bring high-quality TV, video, voice and high-speed data services to millions of consumers and business users throughout Colombia.

The National Fiber Optic Network from Compartel Program is a flagship project of Colombia's Ministry of Information Technology and Communication. One of its goals is to increase broadband coverage from 27.2 percent to 95.5 percent by 2014. Earlier in the year, the GSM Association awarded the project the prestigious Government Leadership Award 2012 as the best Internet access expansion project.

Point-to-Point Fiber Access
Azteca Comunicaciones Colombia is deploying Alcatel-Lucent’s point-to-point fiber broadband access and VDSL technologies, along with a combination of optical transport and IP routing solutions to provide robust, high-speed video, voice and data connections to multitenant buildings, businesses, government offices and individual homes. The infrastructure deployed by Alcatel-Lucent for Azteca Comunicaciones Colombia will be used in 216 of the 753 municipalities.

Specifically, Alcatel-Lucent is supplying a turnkey system comprising broadband access, IP routing and fiber optic technology, including its 7330 Intelligent Services Access Manager FTTN (which, despite its name, supports several fiber access protocols as well as DSL), its IP/MPLS solution, based on its 7750 Service Router and 7705 Service Aggregation Router, and its 100G next-generation coherent technology, supported by the 1830 Photonic Service Switch. In addition, Alcatel-Lucent will provide services such as installation, project management and technical support for two years as well as operation and maintenance of the network.

Alexandra Reyes, CEO of Azteca Comunicaciones Colombia said: "The government of Colombia has set very aggressive targets for increasing the availability of broadband services throughout the country. We turned to Alcatel-Lucent because of its experience with the deployment of large-scale, complex broadband networks. Our collaboration with Alcatel-Lucent - one of the broadband market leaders - will help us to ensure that this project is completed quickly and with exceptional quality."
