HUNTSVILLE, AL - Broadband stimulus grant recipient North Alabama Electric Cooperative is using ADTRAN's Total Access 5000 Multi-Service Access and Aggregation Platform (MSAP), Total Access 300 Series ONTs and NetVanta routers and switches for its fiber-to-the-home buildout. The cooperative will deliver business and residential services to thousands of residents in unserved and underserved areas of rural northern Alabama, as well as to businesses, schools, libraries and even the Bellefonte Nuclear facility. It will also use the fiber network to implement its smart-grid initiatives.

Because of the diverse topology of towns and rural communities in its service area, the cooperative needed both GPON and active Ethernet FTTH capabilities - both of which are supported by the Total Access 5000 platform. North Alabama selected the Total Access 5000 because it provides the flexibility and scalability to configure and provision advanced triple-play services from a single platform.

This deployment will enable electric utility subscribers to move from time-of-day rate models to demand-response rate models, in which energy consumption can be monitored and adjusted in real time. The fiber infrastructure will also allow North Alabama to better communicate with the Tennessee Valley Authority. Near-real-time meter readings will enable demand response for power generation. This project has also served as an engine for economic development, allowing new businesses to develop and grow in the area.

"When looking for a solution to enable smart-grid telemetry and to roll out triple-play services, we thoroughly researched companies and found ADTRAN's widely adopted broadband portfolio to be the perfect selection. ADTRAN's warranty, maintenance and customer service stood out as the best in the industry," said Bruce Purdy, general manager, North Alabama Electric Cooperative. "The Total Access 5000 combined with ADTRAN's broadband portfolio has allowed us to become a model in the industry. Cooperatives from throughout the country are calling us for details of our deployments and asking to tour our facilities. They want to replicate the success we have experienced by offering entirely new, cutting-edge, revenue-generating services to existing electric customers."
