WASHINGTON, DC — With the announcement of 42 entities that have been provisionally selected for funding in its Rural Broadband Experiments program, the FCC has taken the next significant step in creating a competitive environment for broadband development in rural America. By making $100 million in Connect America Fund (CAF) monies available for the creation of new, experimental models, the FCC plans to jump-start investment by providers, including nontraditional providers, in ultra high-speed broadband in underserved, high-cost rural communities.

The winners are separated into three categories according to downstream/upstream speeds. The 19 companies in Category I are seeking support to build networks that are capable of delivering 100 Mbps downstream and 25 Mbps upstream to all locations, and are most likely to be delivering fiber networks.

Category I Companies

  • Airnorth Communications

  • Brainstorm Internet

  • Broad Valley Micro Fiber Networks

  • Cricelli

  • Donnell, Michael D. (d/b/a San Joaquin Broadband)

  • Halstad Telephone Company

  • Lake County d/b/a Lake Connections

  • Liberty Cablevision of Puerto Rico

  • LTD Broadband

  • NCRESA

  • New Lisbon Telephone Company

  • Northeast Rural Services

  • Rural Broadband Services Corporation

  • Skybeam

  • Southwest Arkansas Telephone Cooperative

  • Terastream Broadband (USA)

These companies still have many hurdles to clear before receiving funding. The next step is to complete FCC Form 5620 and submit by noon on Friday, December 19, 2014. The real winners in the end are the communities whose residents and anchor institutions will find themselves living in connected, competitive environments.
