NEW DEHLI, INDIA - The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) is deploying a fiber network across its campus in Kharagpur, India, using GPON equipment from Alphion.

The network, which will connect IIT Kharagpur’s departments, centers, schools, classrooms, offices, residences and open spaces, will distribute services not only from within the campus but also from the pan-Indian National Knowledge Network (NKN). NKN is the state-of-the-art, multigigabit network that provides a high-speed backbone for all knowledge-related institutions in the country.

“IIT Kharagpur is very excited to work with Alphion on the expansion of our access network,” says Professor Damodar Acharya, director of IIT Kharagpur. “The Alphion GPON solution will allow us to provide a wide spectrum of broadband services in the Kharagpur campus including tele-education, Internet, cable video, IPTV, telephony, campus security and Wi-Fi hotspots. This optical fiber network connects to all hostels, enables Wi-Fi hot spot connectivity, will be used to video stream courseware to students and provides coverage to 30,000 people.”
