SAN JOSE, CA - 10 Gbps broadband to the home inched closer to reality as Atheros Communications announced the first complete 10G EPON system-on-chip (SoC) solution for broadband access, mobile backhaul and cable uplink. The solution includes the media access, traffic management and switching components for both ends of the fiber optic line - optical line terminals (OLT, or central office equipment) and optical network units (ONU, or customer-premises equipment). The solution supports 10 Gbps downstream and 1 Gbps upstream and will be upgradable to symmetrical 10 Gbps/10 Gbps service.

Atheros' solution, which delivers more bandwidth and greater scalability than FTTH technologies in use today, will enable service providers to meet the growing bandwidth demands of homes, multiple-dwelling units (MDUs), businesses and cellular networks. Although 10 Gbps isn't needed - yet - for individual homes, 10G EPON equipment is expected to be used for delivering bandwidth to MDUs, businesses and cell sites.

The SoCs comply with the new IEEE 802.3av standard, which provides the optimal combination of performance, advanced features, and compatibility with legacy 1G EPON products. Atheros is sampling to strategic customers in the United States, China and Japan and will soon begin volume production.
