GVTC Fiber Expansion Project Now Includes Boerne Partnership

  • GVTC
SMITHSON VALLEY — GVTC’s fiber overbuild expansion now includes a partnership with city of Boerne. The agreement enables GVTC to expand its fiber network throughout the Boerne city limits to approximately 1,590 homes. GVTC’s fiber network currently covers about two-thirds of Boerne and includes more than 2,900 homes and 500 businesses. The partnership with Boerne pushes GVTC fiber expansion project currently underway from 4,625 to more than 4,960 homes.

In the arrangement, Boerne will allow GVTC to use its utility poles to expand fiber connections to the remaining homes. Boerne and GVTC will also each pay $77,500 to third party contractors for a utility pole load analysis and change out of necessary utility poles. The Boerne fiber network build-out is expected to cost GVTC $1.8 million dollars.

Providing Equal Access to Fiber Internet Services

“The partnership between GVTC and the city of Boerne was reinforced with the commitment, to provide equal access to fiber Internet service to all homes in Boerne city limits,” Boerne Mayor Mike Schultz, said. “This will be a game changer for Boerne’s future in many ways, and for many years to come.”

The Boerne fiber expansion is expected to be complete within 24 months. When finished, Boerne will be among the top 5 percent of cities its size in the nation to be completely wired for fiber network access. Boerne customers will have the option to remain with their current service or take advantage of GVTC’s fiber network service.

Increasing the Region’s Profile

“This enhancement to our GVTC GigaRegion increases the region’s profile to promote our area as a premier destination to live and do business,” GVTC President and CEO Ritchie Sorrells, said. “Boerne will soon be in a unique group of forward-thinking municipalities such as Kansas City, Lafayette, Louisiana and Chattanooga, Tennessee that understand the importance of fiber technology to enhance quality of life and pursue unique economic development opportunities.”

GVTC’s fiber network Internet delivers speeds up to 1 Gbps, or 1,000 megabits, which is among the fastest in the nation. Another feature of fiber technology is ultra-high bandwidth that enables the capacity to maximize the performance of multiple Internet devices in a customer’s home or business.

“I look forward to having Boerne become a complete fiber city,” Boerne City Manager Ron Bowman, said. “High speed internet access has become much more of a necessity than a luxury and having fiber to 100 percent of the homes here will make Boerne unique, as only a handful of cities have this capability throughout the United States.”

The cities of Bulverde and Gonzales are also partner communities in the GVTC GigaRegion.
