ORLANDO, FL - Technology provider Huawei showcased its new HG8240 Optical Network Terminal (ONT) and Intelligent Optical Distribution Network (iODN) at the FTTH Conference and Expo 2011 in Orlando, Fla.

The ONT design allows a single ONT type to be used for indoor, just-inside and outdoor applications, simplifying network operation and reducing deployment costs. The HG8240 ONT, with two POTS ports and four Gigabit Ethernet ports, can be deployed indoors and mounted on a desk or wall. The same ONT can also be placed in an outdoor enclosure or just-inside enclosure as needed. The fact that this high-performance ONT is suitable for multiple applications minimizes inventory costs and improves the efficiency of service installation and provisioning. The HG8240 uses a system-on-chip designed to deliver wire-speed GigE performance and advanced power management function for green operation.

Huawei's iODN brings intelligence to the fiber management system while maintaining the passive (unpowered) nature of the ODN network. The iODN uses eIDs, or electronic identifiers, to automatically identify and manage fiber connections, intelligently determine fiber connection operations and accurately manage optical splitters. With iODN, operators can automatically search the target optical fiber and appropriately operate it, paving the way for efficient FTTP rollouts and accurate isolation and identification of fiber faults.

"Delivering ultra-high speed broadband over fiber access with dramatically improved cost points is the challenge we commit to address," says Reg Wilcox, vice president of network marketing for Huawei Technologies USA.
