MONTPELLIER, FRANCE - The number of FTTH/B subscribers worldwide will increase to 227 million by 2015 from about 61 million at year-end 2010, says European research firm IDATE. The 2010 number itself represents a 53 percent increase over the previous year. By the end of 2015, close to 493 million homes will have fiber connections available, more than half of them in Asia and 15 percent in Western Europe.

IDATE is also conducting an international survey of residential broadband and ultra-broadband subscribers to pinpoint the reasons consumers switch from ordinary broadband to ultra-broadband. The survey is expected to help explain differences in fiber-to-the-home take rates among different areas.
