Köpings Kabel in Sweden Deploys Calix Gear for FTTH

LINKÖPING, SWEDEN – Service provider Köpings Kabel-TV is using the Calix Unified Access portfolio to deliver advanced broadband services to residents and businesses in Köping, a small city in central Sweden. Capable of delivering speeds of up to 1 Gbps, this advanced access infrastructure is one of Europe’s most advanced broadband networks.

The company is deploying several access technologies, including DSL, GPON and point-to-point gigabit Ethernet, across fiber and copper. Although fiber access technologies will be used for most premises, DSL over copper will be used in multiple-dwelling-unit (MDU) properties, where fiber will be deployed to each building and existing in-building copper infrastructure will deliver signals to each unit.

“As the broadband demands of our subscribers continued to grow in our community, we wanted to be able to take advantage of our existing cable ducting infrastructure to provide a wider range of services, including ultra-high-speed data, reliable voice and advanced broadband TV services, as well as our traditional channels,” says Daniel Nordqvist, chief technology officer of Köpings Kabel. “We realized that our existing platform could not scale to meet these demands, so we looked to Calix" - on the recommendation of Swedish reseller Cygate - "to provide us with a portfolio approach. The Calix B6 and the 700GE family of optical network terminals (ONTs) will provide us with the ability to grow as our customer base grows, and to migrate from GPON and DSL to P2P GE as the market demands.”

New Applications for the Future
Köpings Kabel is a well-established operator today, providing cable TV, broadband and voice services. Looking to the future, Köpings Kabel anticipates adding high-definition and 3D TV, multiplayer gaming, and high-speed business data services.

MDUs that use a mixture of fiber to the building and coaxial cable within the building will be able to use their networks for security cameras, monitoring of heating and ventilation systems, and some building management operations. Köping’s schools also plan to use broadband to control HVAC systems and receive alerts of malfunctions in building operations.

Köpings Kabel views deep fiber deployment as a key enabler of its future success. As a cable operator, the company already has good access to many homes and is able to roll out fiber cost-effectively through its existing infrastructure to single and multiple-dwelling residences and businesses.

The B6/700GE solution is well-suited to meet the emerging demands of the Köping community, providing a flexible mix of technology options to efficiently and effectively meet ever-changing services and bandwidth requirements. One advantage is its ability to scale from a few users up to thousands of subscribers. Its distributed traffic processing removes the need for common equipment and simplifies network and service expansion, allowing it to meet the kind of growth requirements that Köpings Kabel is facing as it gradually ramps up services in line with demand.
