NORTH KANSAS CITY, MO — North Kansas City has selected DataShack to operate and maintain the city’s fiber optic network, known as liNKCity. The agreement is the culmination of a process begun in March, when the city solicited proposals for the potential sale or lease of the liNKCity network.

The new partnership combines North Kansas City’s fiber network with DataShack’s huge bandwidth capacity and networking expertise. While DataShack will operate and maintain the fiber network, North Kansas City will continue to own the network.

Free 100 MB Internet Service
Under the lease agreement, DataShack will operate and maintain the city’s fiber optic network for ten years, with the City retaining ownership. DataShack will provide free gigabit Internet service to the city, its library, city churches and all public schools within the city. In addition, as of January 1, 2015, DataShack will provide all existing liNKCity residential customers with free 100 MB Internet service. New residential customers will have various options for free Internet service with an installation fee. Business customers’ existing packages and rates will remain in effect with improved service plans and bandwidth options forthcoming.

North Kansas City will share profits and losses equally with DataShack, with any potential losses for North Kansas City capped at $150,000, including capital investment.

DataShack is one of the Kansas City area’s largest bandwidth consumers and datacenter operators, with headquarters in North Kansas City. With 30 employees, the company provides dedicated and cloud based Internet services to tens of thousands of customers in over 140 countries on six continents.

liNKCity holds the distinction of being the first municipally-owned and operated, true fiber-to-the-premises broadband network in Missouri. The network began construction in 2005 and began serving customers in 2006. liNKCity currently provides Internet service to approximately 900 businesses and residences in North Kansas City.
