Ohio Cooperative Switches to ADTRAN for Rural FTTH Network

HUNTSVILLE, AL – Arthur Mutual Telephone Company (“Arthur”), a cooperative telephone company serving rural northwest Ohio, has selected ADTRAN, a global provider of networking and communications equipment, to power its next-generation FTTH network. After realizing its former incumbent vendor’s DSL platform could not deliver the desired bandwidth necessary for triple-play services, such as IPTV, Arthur modernized its network with ultra-high-speed broadband over fiber, with help from a Rural Utilities Service (RUS) loan from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Arthur chose the ADTRAN Total Access 5000 platform as the foundation for this upgraded network for its scalability and flexible point-to-point active Ethernet architecture. One of the critical factors for Arthur during the selection process was choosing an ultra-flexible, high-capacity fiber solution that could help them future-proof the network and maximize their investment. ADTRAN’s Total Access 5000 helps Arthur ensure it can cost-effectively accommodate current and future bandwidth challenges by providing the flexibility to deploy fiber from either the central office or remote terminals. “We know we are well positioned to meet future growth in services and subscribers and have greater peace of mind knowing we’ve made a future-proof investment,” said Eric Roughton, general manager for Arthur.

Grouping fiber terminations from the home at a remote terminal saves the additional costs of running fiber all the way back to the central office from each subscriber. In addition, the platform’s central office equipment and remote terminals will be interconnected through a 10 Gbps ERPS ring where, if congested, Arthur can easily expand to multiple 10 Gbps links over existing fiber using ADTRAN’s Optical Networking Edge (ONE) solution, providing Arthur with virtually unlimited bandwidth.
