MURRAY HILL, NJ - Fiber-to-the-home deployer Palmetto Rural Telephone Cooperative (PRTC), an independent telco in South Carolina, selected Alcatel-Lucent to provide IPTV-based video services to its customers. PRTC is deploying Alcatel-Lucent’s “starter pack” end–to-end IPTV solution, which is based on the Microsoft Mediaroom 2.0 software platform and scaled for the regional service provider market. The telco will be able to deliver services to additional subscribers and also offer such new services as whole-home DVR, caller ID over the TV, remote DVR, interactive features, access to Web-based content and more.

Microsoft Mediaroom is the most widely used IPTV middleware worldwide, but it was originally scaled only for tier-1 service providers. In the last year or so, Microsoft has worked with integrators such as Alcatel-Lucent to develop scaled-down versions of the middleware that make the same functionality affordable for smaller providers.

By using PRTC’s existing headend investment, Alcatel-Lucent’s Multimedia Integration Services team delivered the entire deployment with only nominal extra hardware. Alcatel-Lucent will integrate the Microsoft Mediaroom middleware on blade servers and will deploy the Multimedia Integration Gateway, which supports complex billing and OSS requirements, as well as the Enhanced IPTV Applications Suite, which delivers a communications gateway, remote DVR and applications dashboard functionality.
