Paraguay Fiber to Reach 210 Municipalities in 2014

PARAGUAY - Plans are underway for over 210 municipalities in Paraguay to receive fiber-optic coverage by mid-2014. The government initially planned to deploy fiber connections in over 200 municipalities by 2015, according to local newspaper La Nacion as reported by independent research firm Telecompaper.

The fiber deployment project is financed by Paraguay’s Universal service Funds (Fondos de Servicios Universales – FSU). The first operator who won the tender for the project deployment was Tigo, who has already connected 28 communities in 2012. Vox is expected to connect an additional 84 municipalities during this year and the next.

According to data provided by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), internet penetration in Paraguay currently reaches 23.9 percent of the population, one of the lowest levels in the region.
