PowerLight Technologies Launches Optical Power Beaming Over Fiber

  • PowerLight Technologies
SEATTLE — PowerLight Technologies, formerly known as LaserMotive, announced it brought high-power, long distance optical power beaming over fiber to commercial markets. Proven to transfer hundreds of watts over hundreds of meters, the company’s patented power over fiber solution delivers power over a beam of light in either free space, or through standard fiber optic cables.

The new technology can be deployed for air, ground and undersea applications, and is aimed at industry sectors including aerospace, UAVs, telecom, disaster response, border safety, and more.

Using Lasers to Convert Electricity to Light
PowerLight employs lasers to convert electricity to light then safely beams the light to a high efficiency receiver where the light is converted back into usable electricity. Through the beam, energy can travel over long distances, at high altitudes and in the deep sea. Without traditional copper wires, applications can realize a level of freedom previously out of reach.

Innovations by the company in beam shaping, thermal management, beam safety, and photovoltaic optimization have led to groundbreaking projects and products. This technology has been validated during demonstration and field testing with the likes of the Department of Defense, NASA, FBI, Lockheed, Airbus, and others.

About PowerLight

Founded in 2007 as LaserMotive, PowerLight has demonstrated the transfer of 400 watts over 1 kilometer. PowerLight has set three world records for beaming power over light, has won two NASA government awards among others, and advanced five generations of technology systems. For the military, which plays an important role in product and use-case validation, PowerLight technology provides an alternative system for delivering power to unmanned assets in the air, on the ground and underwater.
