MILAN -VolkerWessels Telecom, the telecom division of Dutch construction company VolkerWessels, has contracted with the Draka division of cable supplier Prysmian Group to supply equipment for an FTTH deployment in multiple cities in the Netherlands.

Draka will become VolkerWessels' sole partner in a series of FTTH projects that will bring next-generation broadband to an additional 48.000 homes in the Netherlands and that may be extended to an additional 63.000 households. Construction will begin in January and is expected to be completed by the end of 2012. These networks are an expansion of the Reggefiber nationwide fiber network, which currently covers 110 municipalities in the Netherlands.

Under the agreement, Draka will be responsible for the materials requirements of VolkerWessels Telecom's FTTH projects over the coming year. Draka will provide materials from its portfolio for the deployment of passive infrastructure to townships and communities throughout center and northeast of the country.

Draka estimates that the project requirements will include more than 1,100 km of fiber cable and 6,200 km of direct-buried fiber access cable, together with ducts, microtubes, ODF drawers and cabinets.
