REGINA, CANADA and PARIS — SaskTel, the incumbent telecom provider in Saskatchewan, selected Alcatel-Lucent as the primary technology vendor for its fiber-to-the-premises program.

SaskTel recently announced it would invest approximately $670 million in a seven-year program for next-generation
broadband access. Between 2011 and 2017, the company will deploy FTTP using GPON technology in the nine largest urban centers in the province.

However, SaskTel's project affects more than just the access network - the company plans to create a single, fully converged, end-to-end IP network for its wireless and wireline business and residential services. According to Alcatel-Lucent, its High Leverage Network (HLN) architecture, which will be used for the converged network, is a simpler, more integrated architecture that reduces the costs of operation and maintenance and that consumes considerably less power. The converged network will incorporate a number of Alcatel-Lucent wireline, IP and optical products. When complete, the converged network will allow SaskTel to increase its service footprint while improving operational efficiency, reliability and performance.

SaskTel selected the Alcatel-Lucent 5780 Dynamic Services Controller (DSC) as a key service-enabling technology for the converged network. By providing enhanced subscriber management and policy control, the DSC will empower SaskTel to create new services quickly while ensuring that the network operates efficiently.

In addition to the 5780 DSC, the deployment includes the following Alcatel-Lucent products:

• 1830 Photonic Service Switch
• 7750 Service Router
• 5620 Service Aware Manager
• GPON-based 7342 Intelligent Services Access Manager Fiber-to-the-User (ISAM FTTU) to
provide high-speed triple-play services over a single fiber.
