OAKLAND, CAEtihad Etisalat (Mobily), a mobile voice and data service provider in Saudi Arabia, is building a nationwide fiber network that will backhaul 2G and 3G mobile data traffic for its 18 million mobile subscribers. Mobily's mobile network covers all cities and major towns in Saudi Arabia and more than 22,000 km of highways. The fiber network will also be used to launch a fixed broadband service and deliver high-speed Internet access and advanced video services to residential and business customers.

Mobily is using Zhone's MXK optical line termination (OLT), through a partnership with BTC Networks, for its GPON technology. Because the MXK supports multiplay services for residential and business customers and mobile backhaul simultaneously, Mobily was able to configure its networks with maximum flexibility and efficiency.

Saudi Arabia, which has one of the biggest and fastest-growing economies in the Middle East, has high broadband penetration - currently, more than 2 million households, or 33 percent of the total, subscribe to fixed broadband service - but because more than 80 percent of these subscribers use xDSL, there is plenty of opportunity for fiber-based services to compete.

"The scalability and density of Zhone's MXK gives us the unprecedented flexibility, robust network control and the ability to offer more bandwidth to customers with greater efficiency," says Salah ALamoudi, VP Transmission Mobily. "Our established wireless presence and our expansive fixed broadband plans necessitated a multiservice platform choice with high scalability, density, reliability and interoperability. We tested many platforms before choosing the MXK as one of our FTTx vendor partners. Zhone's success in the region with the MXK platform was a big reason for our choice of going with Zhone."
