DENVER, CO — The South Bay Cities Council of Governments (SBCCOG) in Los Angeles County, California is nearing the completion of the South Bay Fiber Network (SBFN), with support and guidance from Magellan Advisors. SBCCOG’s contractor, American Dark Fiber (ADF) is completing the implementation of the SBFN core ring, which is connecting the 15 South Bay Cities to two internet points of presence, providing gigabit internet services with subscribers which each choose to receive 1, 2, or 10 Gbps services.
SBFN will also connect South Bay Workforce Investment Board (SBWIB), Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Lundquist Institute, West Basin Municipal Water District (WBMWD), Los Angeles County Department of Public Works (LADPW), and others. With this public-private partnership, SBFN provides affordable gigabit services to public agencies throughout the South Bay region and will shortly offer broadband services directly to private enterprises at reasonable prices. The network will continue to add agencies and businesses over time. (SBFN is not offering residential broadband services.)
Magellan Advisors has partnered with SBCCOG since 2016, when it assisted in the development of a fiber master plan for the region. Over the past four years, Magellan has worked with SBCCOG to implement the plan. Magellan supported a competitive bidding process to select ADF as partners. Most recently, Magellan acted as negotiating agent for the master SBFN contract, supported securing initial funding of $4.4 million, then additional funding of $2.5 million, bringing total grant funding from Metro to construct the network to over $6.9 million. Magellan has filled the construction management role for SBFN and has assisted in the SBFN sales effort for critical clients. Magellan also supported SBCCOG in obtaining $1.2 million from State of California to support application development and city collaborations
On June 25, 2020, SBCCOG approved another one-year contract extension for Magellan to continue the construction management, financial oversight, and strategic advisory services for SBCCOG in completing regional implementation of SBFN.
