Superior Essex Announces LEED Credit for its Optical Fiber Cables

  • Superior Essex
ATLANTA — Superior Essex, a manufacturer and supplier of cable, wire and accessory products serving the communications industry, has introduced Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for optical fiber cables. EPDs have been published for 25 Superior Essex premises optical fiber cable products, including multiple designs of plenum rated and riser rated cables. These EPDs allow Superior Essex optical fiber cables to contribute toward points in the LEED certification process. The LEED program has become the standard in the USA for rating and certifying the environmental impact of building projects, including new construction and existing structures.

LEED's Material and Resource Credit
The EPDs attributed to Superior Essex optical fiber cables can be used towards the receipt of a material and Resource Credit under LEED version 4. An EPD is a comprehensive report that examines the environmental impact of a product or product family through its lifecycle, which provides the transparency necessary to assess the environmental standing of the products. EPDs for Superior Essex have been certified and published by Underwriters’ Laboratories (UL).

“Superior Essex is committed to being transparent regarding the health and environmental impacts of our products," says Steve Born, senior applications engineer and LEED AP for Superior Essex. "To further demonstrate this commitment, we have now published EPDs for our premises optical fiber products. These EPDs, in addition to our EPDs and HPDs for premises copper, not only help to solidify our position as the industry leader, but also help those organizations looking to achieve LEED certification.”

The Superior Essex EPDs are available in the UL Sustainable Product Guide.
