TDS 1 Gbps Availability Jumps 500% in Dane County, Wisconsin

MADISON, WI — Access to super-high speed internet is rapidly expanding in Dane County thanks to TDS Telecom’s (TDS) network enhancements. As of June, the company offered 1Gig connections to about 43,600 Dane County service addresses over a fiber-to-the-home network. This total includes both residential and businesses addresses in the communities of Sun Prairie, Verona, Waunakee, Middleton, Black Earth, and Fitchburg.

TDS’ availability of 1 Gbps speeds has increased about 500% since the company first launched the service in March of 2014 to 7,000 homes. “Today nearly half of our customers in Dane County now have access to a 1 Gbps connection and we’re far from done,” says Jim Butman, president and CEO of TDS. “We are building to meet the rising demand for high-speed data connections.”

Multiple Fiber Construction Projects Underway

TDS has multiple active construction projects in the area to push fiber deeper into their networks and reach more residential and business addresses. Many of these projects impact communities TDS has served, in some cases, for 50 years—as long as TDS has been in business.

“In the next 12 months we expect to upgrade more than 13,000 addresses to fiber connections in Cross Plains, Black Earth, Middleton, Verona, and Waunakee,” says Butman. “It all comes back to our core belief in investing in communities to deliver great service experiences.”

TDS is also expanding 1 Gbps FTTH availability in communities outside of its historic footprint including Oregon, McFarland, Monona, Cottage Grove, and DeForest. The company has already launched 3,000 addresses in Oregon and construction continues in the other communities. In total, the company expects to add nearly 25,000 addresses to the company’s fiber footprint in Dane County.

Beyond the projects impacting metropolitan areas, TDS continues to make progress on a variety of state and federal grant projects in southern rural Wisconsin. Work has been completed in many areas, including the towns of Berry and Vermont near Black Earth, where speeds have been upgraded to 25Mbps to the majority of addresses. In addition, speed upgrades are planned or in progress in areas around Beetown, Cross Plains, New Glarus, Reeseville, Johnson Creek, Monticello, South Wayne, Juda, and others in South Central Wisconsin.
