KFAR-SABA, ISRAEL - TeliSwitch Solutions announced the release of its patented PON-AODF, which enables the split ratio in passive optical networks to be dynamically changed to adapt to service penetration.

Today, PON operators split fiber signals from an optical line terminal (OLT) port into 32 or even 64 individual data streams. When penetration rates are low - as they often are when fiber to the home is initially deployed - this design wastes OLT ports, as a port must be allocated to each splitter even if the splitter serves only a single customer. In addition, when customers demand higher bandwidth, the high split ratio can cause a shortage in bandwidth.

PON-AODF can allow operators to remotely adapt PON splitting ratios to growth, enabling them to connect more homes without compromising future bandwidth. This can save operators up to 50 percent of their OLT ports. Installing PON-AODF with an OLT upgrades the PON with adaptive splitting ratio capabilities while preserving the passive nature of the optical distribution network - that is, without requiring powered equipment in the field.

PON-AODF is an automated optical distribution frame enhanced with adaptive splitting capabilities. It offers optical performance identical to that of high-quality passive optical distribution frames and preserves optical links during power loss or maintenance. The life expectancy of its optical module is similar to typical optical infrastructure life spans. Remote service provisioning and remote network testing are also among its benefits.
