Telkom SA Partners With Alcatel-Lucent for Network Transformation

  • FTTH
  • VDSL2
PARISTelkom SA, the largest integrated communications company in Africa, will expand the availability of next-generation broadband services throughout South Africa to deliver IPTV, video on demand and other new services. Alcatel-Lucent will supply the network equipment to enable this network transformation.

The project, part of Telkom’s strategic Network Transformation Initiative, includes upgrading the existing access network with VDSL2 technology to serve 4.4 million subscribers and, where commercially viable, introducing GPON technologies to support FTTH capabilities. Alcatel-Lucent is providing Telkom SA with its Intelligent Services Access Manager (ISAM) product family, which supports GPON and VDSL2 on the same platform.

Alcatel-Lucent’s ISAM product family can support a mix of fiber-to-the-home, fiber-to-the-node and fiber-to-the-building deployment models, giving Telkom the flexibility to choose the quickest, most cost-effective way to meet subscribers’ broadband needs in any particular situation.
