HUNTSVILLE, AL — Tombigbee Communications, a subsidiary of Tombigbee Electric Cooperative, has selected FiberRise, a fiber network solutions firm, to build a fiber infrastructure. The new service, called Freedom Fiber, will deliver speeds up to 10 Gbps and a minimum speed of 100 Mbps.

Freedom Fiber will initially serve the cities of Hamilton and Winfield, with plans to expand the fiber optic network to more than 1,600 miles across Northwest Alabama covering areas across Marion, Lamar, Fayette and Winston counties beginning in 2018. Within five years, every rural home in the Tombigbee service area will have access to advanced fiber-optic Internet.

Making a Transformational Investment

“We care deeply about our residents and the communities we serve, and we understand the critical need for access to high speed internet in order to thrive in the years ahead,” said Steve Foshee, Tombigbee general manager. “This is why we are making a transformational investment to provide affordable access to the highest-speed fiber network available, and FiberRise has been a big part of helping us develop a plan to make this work, both economically and physically.”

Unlike traditional engineering firms that build fiber networks that look like cable companies or telco networks, FiberRise will build an optimized fiber infrastructure that will provide the capability for new services such as Smart City expansions, SMART Grid electric infrastructure enhancements, and ultra fast broadband service, as well as custom fiber services tailored for small and large industries. These advanced solutions will be offered at very competitive prices generally available only in large urban cities.

Cooperative Control over Network
”We are delighted to have the opportunity to serve Tombigbee as their partner with engineering, design and operations support,” said Noah Southerland, COO of FiberRise. “Since we are only focused in the electric utility space we can bring uncompromised levels of support and service to our partners, providing them with special management tools and services so that when our project is complete they are equipped to fully operate and support it for the long term. This is very important so that they have full control over the network, ensuring that the cooperative maintains the level of service expected by their communities. It requires a true partnership approach and one that we fully embrace at FiberRise.”
