SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH - UTOPIA, the fiber optic network owned by a consortium of 16 Utah cities, is one of the few U.S. broadband providers to sell consumers their fiber connections to the network. Most U.S. providers bundle the costs of network connections into consumers' monthly service fees. Now UTOPIA is offering another unusual option for fiber connection - a monthly user fee for a minimum two-year period.
UTOPIA says that, though the ownership-like model is the best option because the fiber connection becomes part of the subscriber's real property, "we understand that it doesn't work for everyone." The new plan, which was adopted based on customer feedback, is intended to make UTOPIA subscriptions affordable for more residents.
