BEIJING- UTStarcom, an access network and video equipment provider won a contract to supply EPON equipment for Ningxia Electric Power Company's smart electric grid. EPON is a communications technology most often used in fiber-to-the-home deployments.

Since 2010, Ningxia Electric, which is a subsidiary of the State Grid Corporation in Ningxia province, has accelerated the construction of its integrated electric distribution system and communication platform as the Chinese government spurs the development of smart grid networks. By 2012, Ningxia Electric expects the integrated electric distribution system and communication platform to be operational in five cities.

"Our EPON solution enhances Ningxia Electric's distribution system and communication platform, integrating more functionality at a low cost of entry," says UTStarcom Chief Executive Officer Jack Lu. "We are encouraged by the new contract and are confident we will be able to capitalize on similar opportunities in the future as China's government continues to promote the digitalization and automation of the state grid network."
