BEACHWOOD, OHIO - In another move to make wave-division multiplexing more affordable, optical transceiver company Champion ONE announced the launch of its uTune Director - an appliance used to tune tunable dense-wave division multiplexing (DWDM) XFP-pluggable transceivers and lock their channels so the transceivers can be used as fixed-channel DWDM solutions.

This patent-pending technology enables network operators to reduce their investment in sparing requirements for fixed-channel DWDM networks and instantly turn up new DWDM circuits, potentially saving millions of dollars for network operators while increasing network responsiveness.

Until now, telecom and datacom network operators that light fixed-channel, XFP-based DWDM networks had to keep spare transceivers for every channel they deployed. As DWDM networks can support up to 40 channels at 100GHz spacing and 80 channels at 50GHz spacing, the sparing requirements can be significant. For example, the list price of DWDM XFPs from switch vendors can approach $20,000; at 80 channels, this equates to $1.6M in sparing costs. However, uTune Director nearly eliminates this ongoing burden. Replacing 80 fixed-channel XFP DWDM spares with a single uTune Director and one Champion ONE tunable DWDM XFP for less than $7,000 allows for immediate, measurable savings. Across multiple networks, service providers can save millions of dollars in infrastructure expenses that can be redeployed to support future network growth.

The uTune Director is a book-sized appliance with a built-in LCD and both XFP and SFP+ ports. A standalone device that does not require a PC or network connection, it uses an included external 120V AC power adapter. Once tuned, a tunable optic is removed and deployed into an XFP
transceiver port. An optic can be retuned at any time. The uTune Director provides tuning for up to 50GHz channel spacing for maximum network support.

By placing the uTune Director in labs, warehouses and other sparing facilities, and inventorying a single tunable XFP, telecom and datacom providers can completely eliminate the ongoing need to spare every channel at each location. In addition to generating savings this technology can be
used to instantly turn up new DWDM circuits to meet customer demand and generate additional revenue.

Champion ONE’s uTune Director currently supports tuning the DWDM XFP form factor. Champion ONE plans to release SFP+ tuning capability for the uTune Director in the near future.
